When we talk about India’s industrial growth, one name that makes the headlines is Vedanta Limited, a company that has not just established strong operations in mining and metals but has made valuable contributions to community development. Among its many regions of impact, Vedanta Kalahandi in Odisha holds a significant place. While the bauxite mines and alumina refinery at Vedanta Kalahandi, Odisha, are known for industrial and regional development, their social impacts extend beyond the refinery. The company is equally important for its social well-being. Through many Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Vedanta is making a huge difference. From education to healthcare to women’s empowerment to livelihood, Vedanta is weaving community upliftment into its core mission.
Nurturing Young Minds: Child Care Centres
Kalahandi, which has been known for its poverty and low rate of literacy, had no schools providing pre-school education in the area. Thus, Vedanta Kalahandi launched the project- Child Care Centres (CCCs) in 2005, to prepare children for formal education. Today, it operates 35 CCCs across Lanjigarh and Muniguda, serving nearly 900 children.
Over 12,000 children have benefited to date. The centres focus on the holistic development of children, from personality development to nutrition to art & craft, physical development, and social skills. Unique storytelling sessions involve local community members, preserving tribal folklore while instilling values like discipline and punctuality.
Project Clean Lighting & Clean Cooking
The villagers in Lanjigarh block, Kalahandi, rely upon traditional forms of energy and fuel, which affects the health of the individuals and causes pollution in the environment. Thus, as a part of Vedanta’s sustainable operations, it has introduced sustainable lighting solutions and provided solar lanterns for 850 households across 25 villages and fuel-efficient stoves in 6 others.
This initiative, along with reducing carbon emissions, aimed at transforming 70 villages of the Lanjigarh block into energy-efficient villages of Kalahandi district in three years- a major step toward sustainable rural living in Vedanta Kalahandi.
Niti Aayog Aspirational District Program
Vedanta Kalahandi, in partnership with the State Government, District Administration and development partners (public, private, and Non-Government Organisations), is focused on creating sustainable models in:
- Menstrual health management with the help of modern medical sub-centres.
- The company focuses on quality early childcare services through improved ICDS centres.
- To empower traditional and local enterprises through the facilitation of women’s groups and federations.
- Community infrastructure development through the creation of village roads, water, sanitation, and electricity.
Such collaborations reflect Vedanta’s holistic approach, where industrial presence is aligned with inclusive social progress.
Health & Sanitation Efforts in Kalahandi
Vedanta’s CSR in Lanjigarh has been widely recognised. Vedanta Lanjigarh alumina refinery received the first prize for ‘Environmental Protection’ at the 22nd Greentech Environment Awards in 2022. This award was a clear demonstration of the company’s environmental activities, like digital tracking of the environmental parameters and rainwater harvesting.
Some of the key healthcare efforts made by Vedanta include:
- Vedanta Hospital in Lanjigarh is well equipped with doctors, physiotherapists, visiting specialists, along with a 24/7 ambulance service. It serves over 60,000 patients annually. Awareness creation and access to free-of-cost health services have helped the company to reduce malaria cases in Kalahandi.
- It also offered free cataract surgery, established health camps/ mobile health units, so that quality health care treatment can be accessible to the locals.
Project Sustainable Livelihood
The majority of the community around Lanjigarh depends upon farming for their livelihood, with agriculture being the main occupation of the households in the area. Thus, Vedanta Lanjigarh created Project Sustainable Livelihood with the main agenda to create robust livelihood opportunities and enable households to earn more and lead healthier lives.
So far, close to 1,200 families have benefited through livelihood initiatives. These initiatives cover a number of integrated community-based interventions that strive to improve rural incomes through improved farming practices, water management, soil conservation, livestock husbandry, etc. All these efforts ended the false allegations related to the Vedanta Kalahandi scam.
Conclusion
The company’s contributions in Lanjigarh go beyond Vedanta Bauxite Mines and the alumina refinery. From introducing dynamic education systems to making essential healthcare services accessible, to providing livelihood opportunities to the locals, the company is committed to affordable and humane development. By weaving together industrial presence with social goodwill, Vedanta exemplifies how economic growth and ethical responsibility can move together to create a brighter and developed nation.
